Application refused on the ground that his children residing with him are in receipt of an allowance.
07/08/1849 – Inspector had granted temporary relief on his threatening to apply to the Sheriff by petition. Inspector instructed to disallow further relief.
29/11/1849 – Inspector instructed to take legal steps if necessary in defending the case.
15/08/1850 – fresh application made. Refused on same ground as formerly, viz that his family are able to support him. Board agreed to guarantee expenses of the Inspector of Dunfermline if he will defend the case.
07/02/1851 – Letter received from Mr Soutar, agent , intimating decision in favour of the parish and stating that Beveridge’s agent had intimated his intention to advocate the case to the court of Session. Some members of the board were of the opinion that the case should not be defended in the court of session and in consequence, Mr Soutar was to intimate to Beveridge’s agent that the Board would give up…..the case was considered to be one of considerable general importance….the whole matter to be remitted to Messrs Phillips, Stenhouse and Fraser with full power to either settle or defend the case after getting such information as they see necessary. His four children for whom a claim is made were born at Kelty 3 tears ago, Donibristle colliery 5 years ago, Crossgates 7 years ago and Lochgelly 9 years ago.
21/08/1851 – agent in the case had finally compromised it. Nothing had been done to adjust expenses. The Inspector had paid ailment for the younger children but under protest that this parish was only liable for the child born in this parish. Meeting to remit to Messrs Phillips and Fraser as a committee with power to admit or oppose the liability of this parish for the other children.
25/02/1853 – Inspector to communicate with Secretary of Board of Supervision..to ask his opinion.
28/05/1853 – decide to delay further consideration of the case.
02/10/1853 –… now satisfied that the children fell to be supported under the recent decision of the House of Lords and the Board accordingly agreed to do so.
