The Scottish Women's Rural Institutes (S.W.R.I.) organisation was launched in June 1917 by Catherine Blair, a suffragette, magistrate, and advocate for rural women.
The S.W.R.I. was established to enable women in rural areas of the country to socialise, learn new skills, and make money from items they made.
At the time of their Golden Jubilee in 1967, the S.W.R.I. had 1,200 branches and around 56,000 members.
