Visitation of the Diocese of Dunblane : and other churches 1586-1589

1984
Books, Manuscripts
From the introduction. The significance of the Visitation of the 'Diocese' of Dunblane, as an ecclesiastical record, is to be measured not merely by its claim to be the earliest, detailed surviving account of regional supervision by an individual overseer in the reformed church but also by the diversity of evidence which emerges from the record on the problems confronting local congregations in a predominantly rural area straddling the upper reaches of the River Forth and its tributaries, more than two decades after the Reformation of 1560, and at a date for which no kirk session records for the region have survived to shed light on parish life. In all, twenty-five parishes were grouped together in the commissioner's book of visitation covering the years from 1586 to 1589. Centred on Dunblane - or conceivably even Stirling, as the commissioner or visitor responsible for overseeing the parishes was James Anderson, minister of Stirling - the area for supervision, so far as the record reveals, extended in the north from the central-Perthshire parishes of Fowlis Wester, Crieff, Strowan, Muthill, Aberuthven and Auchterarder in Strathearn southwards through Strathallan to the episcopal seat of Dunblane and eastwards across the Ochil hills to Logie, Alva, Tillicoultry, Dollar, Glendevon, Fossoway and Muckhart, and in the carse of Forth to Tullibody, Clackmannan and Tulliallan along the northern shore and, on the south side, to Stirling, St Ninians, Airth, Bothkennar and Falkirk, and further inland to Larbert, and, then, west of Stirling to Kippen, Aberfoyle, Port, and Kincardine in Menteith.
