Books, Manuscripts
This publication consists of a transcript of two separate documents. The Examination Roll of Arbroath for 1752 and the Town's Duty Roll for Arbroath of 1753. There is an introduction for each document and an image of a 'Map of the burgh of Arbroath' and a 'Map of the parish of Arbroath' respectively. On the cover of the publication is a reproduction of the 1693 'Prospect of the Town of Aberbrothock' by John Slezer. As the introduction to the 'Examination Roll of Arbroath' explains, the examination roll is invaluable to genealogists as it provides 'a comprehensive list of the population over three years and the only record of births in the parish for ten years'. The definition of an examination roll is described as 'a list of persons adhering to the Church of Scotland and of age to be examined in the Catechism. It was made up and used by the catechist, in this case probably William Bell, the parish minister.' In addition to the Introduction, there are also Notes, an Index and an Appendix with lists of craftsmen. The Town's Duty Roll runs from Martinmas 1753 to Martinmas 1754 and as cited in the introduction 'supplements the genealogical information given in the Examination Roll of Arbroath 1752'. The introduction proceeds to explain that 'A town's duty roll was prepared by the burgh treasurer to list those burgesses liable for feu-duty or similar duties paid into the common good. Each roll was used for about two years.' The series of Duty Rolls for Arbroath possibly began circa 1739 and this roll is the seventh.
