China, 1931. A boat from Hong Kong arrives carrying an important official and his striking wife, Leng. Amid the raucous sound of firecrackers, gunshots ring out: an assassin has shot the official and then himself. Leng disappears in the ensuing chaos. Soon, Hsueh, a Franco-Chinese photographer aboard the same boat is trapped between two beautiful but devious women in the seamy, dangerous world of Shanghai's French Concession.
