Articles
In this edition of the magazine The story of Scotland there are a variety of articles relating to scots abroad. Of particular interest to Fife readers will be the articles on Alexander Slekirk and Andrew Carnegie. In The Real Robinson Crusoe (p.928-929), Ivy Jardine tells the story of Alexander Selkirk, born in Largo in 1676. The article looks at his life of adventure and the events that lead to him being thought of as the inspiration for the character Robinson Crusoe. In The Gospel of Wealth (p.947-949), Eric Simpson begins his story with the visit by Andrew Carnegie to Dunfermline in 1881 and continues with the story of the family's departure to America and Carnegie's eventual success in the iron and steel industry. Looking both at his reputation in the world of business and his reputation for philanthropy.
