In the 1790s the parish ministers in Fife were unanimous in their condemnation of the roads in their area. Sixteen turnpike trusts were eventually set up and by 1845 conditions had greatly improved thanks mainly to the toll keepers. This is a description of the conditions they lived under in their toll houses.
