He was baptized at Muthill on 29 August 1768. He was educated at the University of Glasgow. He passed advocate at the Scottish bar on 3 July 1790, and became the close friend and literary confidant of Sir Walter Scott. On 13 September 1800 Kinneder married Euphemia Robison (only daughter of Professor John Robison- Physicist), who died in September 1819. She was buried in the churchyard of Saline, Fife, where there is an epitaph on her tombstone written by Scott.
