This book is by Carnock-born architect John Allan. He discusses locality, site, axis and level, foundation, structure, walls and roofs, water supply, trees as sanitary agents, drainage, earth closets, ventilation, lighting and heating, the interior, hints to householders, education and legislation, and the poor and their domiciliation, all with a view to the construction, provision and maintenance of more healthy housing. There are illustrations of toilets, gas light fittings etc. Of interest are the illustrated advertisements that enclose the book. An ad of Stirling as a health resort gives John Allan's address as 12 Murray Place, Stirling; the streetname has been scored through.
