The parishes of medieval Scotland

Cowan, Ian B1967
Books, Manuscripts
This work lists all the parishes in medieval Scotland, as the parish was the basic unit in the organisation of the Medieval Church. The writer was keen to 'trace who in the final instance enjoyed the revenues of each parish', an investigation complicated by the fact that 'in many instances both parsonage and vicarage revenues were diverted from their parish of origin'. Thus in the appendix, Dunfermline Abbey is shown to have appropriated or annexed, at least temporarily, some 25 churches (see pp216-217).
