Includes portrait of James Ferguson. Dedicated to Sir David Brewster, Ferguson's editor. Written to further detail Ferguson's life when a purchased memoir didn't include enough information for the 30 years he spent living in England, to include previously omitted details. The engravings illustrate and describe some of his mechanical inventions and appartatus. Information was gathered by the following means: Common Place book; reviews of his publications and inventions (found in the records of the Royal Society and newspapers and magazines); manuscript letters and philosophical papers as well as material collected by the editor over the course of 36 years. This copy includes 2 additional handwritten apendices: extracts from Birmingham Gazette relative to Ferguson's lectures in that town in the summer of 1771. Sent in by John A Sangford Esqr. LL.D, editor; Memorandum of E Henderson's visit to Rothiemary and Keith on 18th August 1870, both written by Henderson himself.
