William Napier was a musician and music shopkeeper who was in debt. Haydn arranged 100 Scottish songs in the modern style with bass accompaniment and violin for Napier. These songs sold so quickly that Napier was saved from his money difficulties. Two years later, during Haydn's second stay in London a further 50 songs were added to the collection.
