Continously occupied for five centuries, Aberdour Castle allows visitors to glimpse the changing lifestyles of its noble residents over many generations. The earliest part of the site, probalby 12th-century, now lies in ruins, but fine masonry survives as evidence of the original building's sophistication. More obviously attractive is the east range, added by William, 8th Earl of Morton in the 17th cenury. Perhaps most fascinating are the grand residence and terraced gardens of his ancestor Regent Morton in his heyday the most powerful man in Scotland.
