Two small booklets printed in Edinburgh, both supporting the Rev. Thomas Gillespie. One is 'case reviewed and supported by Mr Baine' (Rev. Mr James Baine) and the other is 'case supported by Mr Stark at Kinross'. Both are in the form of letters - Mr Stark's as 'in a letter to a friend', and Mr Baine's as 'in a letter to The Reverend Dr W____r. (Dr Webster) dated July 18 1770, Edinburgh. The case against Thomas Gillespie, is in determining his capacity of exercising the office of the ministry, within the Church of Scotland. In 1752 the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland deprived Rev. Gillespie of taking over the ministry of the Parish of Inverkeithing, and this was unexpected as Rev. Gillespie had held that same office of ministry in the Parish of Carnock (less than 10 miles from Inverkeithing). Rev. Gillespie had been ordained in England initially in January 1741, and then took over as Minister in Carnock in September of the same year. At this time, the presbytery of Dunfermline agreed to sustain as valid, the ordination he had received in England, and to allow a qualification of his subscription to the church's doctrinal symbol, so far as it had reference to the sphere of the civil magistrate in matters of religion.
