Three stenographic notebooks

Erskine, Ralph, 1685-17521713
Books, Manuscripts
Collection of notebooks written using a stenographic system. The third notebook describes the notation system used and includes all the symbols and rules used and a set of examples for learners of the system. The first collection of notes are by Ralph Erskine, one of the pages containing the date 1713, later pages in the notebook carry the dates 1741 and 1742, otherwise they are undated. The first set of notes carries a title page as follows, 'Notes of sermons and le[?] with essays or fragments on various subjects chiefly by the Rev. Ralph Erskine Dunfermline. Formerly detached and scattered, but now collected and sewed together by D. Fraser, Kennoway 1827. ''Gather up the fragments that remain that nothing be lost'' Jesus Christ.' Since then the notebooks have seen preservation efforts and have been stitched together into a paper binding, the whole collection is stored in a box. Some of the pages have pins through them, or are held together with stitching from a previous time. The second collection of notes bears the names of Ralph Erskine and Ebenezer Erskine.
