East Wemyss is one part of the Wemyss Parish which is composed of the three villages East and West Wemyss and the Coaltown. The village was at one time mainly around Macduff Castle but when the castle was sold in the 15C, the focus of the village moved from the castle to West Wemyss. Macduff has grown again around the Rosie pit which was sunk in 1880 and closed in1953.
