Pamphlet on the importance of education in Great Britain. In this pamphlet of Mr Gifford's opinions of education, predominantly in Scotland, where he describes how Andrew Carnegie's gift of 2 million pounds towards education (unprecedented) and the start of his free libraries were designed to help educate the nation. However, Mr Gifford goes on to say that 'gifts' of this nature cannot truly be called free, as they entail far more outlay in taxes that have to be borne by the whole community in the years to come. He goes on, however, to say that Dr [Andrew] Carnegie is entitled to the gratitude of the nation, as the largeness of his desire is to benefit mankind.
