It would appear outrageous to suggest that a Scottish loch, particularly one as internationally famous as Loch Leven, should be reduced to three quarters of its original size in order to serve the needs of industry and agriculture, but in 1794 that idea was first contemplated. In 1828-32 the partial drainage of Loch Leven was eventually carried out, completely transforming the landscape
