This booklet traces the development of poor relief in Scotland using government and legal records as well as private collections in the national archives. It is illustrated by Kirk Session records, Acts of Parliament, poorhouse records and so on. There is reference to legislation: eg. Act of the Scottish Parliament, 1579, making Kirk Sessions responsible for administering poor relief in rural passages; and the Poor Law Amendment (Scotland) Act of 1845, following a Royal Commission into pauperism.
