At about quarter past seven on the evening of Sunday 28th December 1879, in one of the worst storms for years, the thirteen central spans- the 'high girders'-of the rail bridge over the Tay between Wormit in Fife and Dundee fell into the river, carrying with them the 5.20 train from Burntisland and 75 passengers and crew. There were no survivors
