George Hay Forbes was the son of Lord Medwyn and the brother of the Bishop of Brechin, Alexander Penrose Forbes. After a short period as a deacon at Crieff, he came to Burntisland in October 1848 to re-found the Episcopal Church there. He never had a congregation of more than about thirty people, but he exercised a wide influence upon the Church at large, and in the burgh became Provost.
