The history of Auchtermuchty is as long as that of any other burgh in Scotland; but it does not live in its past, although every effort is made to preserve buildings of historic and architectural interest. Macduff House, once the residence of the Thane of Fife, dates in part from the 14th century. A distinctive feature of this picturesque burgh is that a number of the roofs here are thatched.
