When the Forth Road Bridge was completed in 1964, it was seen as the greatest civil engineering feat of Britain in the 20th Century. At the time it was the largest in Europe and fourth in the world, prompting the author to investigate the whole story of the Forth crossing. He concentrated on people and events rather than technology and it has resulted in a fascinating social history of much more than purely Scottish Interest.
