From the preface: The aim of the writer has been to tell in brief compass and popular language the history of Scotland so far as transacted within the bounds of teh old Kingdom, which includes the two modern counties of Fife and Kinross, or in a few cases by their natives, though beyond these bounds. It will be readily seen that the book is only a sketch, and that there is no intention to compete with the learned and exhaustive form of County History which gives a complete survey of every part of a county.
