The tramways of Kirkcaldy

Brotchie, A. W. (Alan Walter), 1938-1978
Books, Manuscripts
Of the small transport undertakings investigated in this series, Kirkcaldy's was the only one which was municipally owned. Conceived in the final years of the nineteenth century, it was definitely then a small piece of municipal one-up-manship, bringing electric light and cheap travel to the developing town. Unfortunately the town was not designed for the amount of tramways built, and although given the best and most economical management possible, the line suffered from being too much public property. Council interference prevented logival decisions being made, almonst from first to last. The story is fascinating, of a constant struggle to keep head above water; finally pushed under, as so many other small tramways were, by unrestrained bus competition.
