Lindores Abbey and its historic associations

Rea, Archibald Henry1902
Books, Manuscripts
The story of Lindores Abbey on the outskirts of Newburgh, traced from its foundation in the 12th century until the time when the Reformation in Scotland brought about the ruin of many magnificent buildings. Although the inhabitants of Newburgh kept possession of the Abbey Church as a place of workship, the stonework of the Abbey was much sought after until nearly every dressed stone was carried away. Afterwards the place was left in neglect and was known as the wilderness. However more recently the architectural features of the ruins have been preserved by its historian. This book also tells the many stories of the Abbey including the Abbots of Lindores, John Lesslie, the last Abbot of Lindores as well as tales of the many royal visitors to the Abbey. There are also numerous illustrations of the various features of the ruins and neighbourhood.
