As a protestant minister in the early 18th century Ralph Erskine's poem welcomes the new protestant King, George I, to the throne. This was a period of transition in Scotland and England with the relatively recent Acts of Union (1707) which had left the Scots dissatisfied with the deal that was made and Erskine's poem reflects this. He also makes reference to hopes for regained glory for Dunfermline as a home to previous Kings and Queens of Scotland and expresses his dislike of the Jacobites and the 'Pretender', James. The poem reflects some of the attitudes of protestant Scotland at this time.
