This book does not claim to be an biography of Lord Kelvin in the normal sense of things, but rather an account of some of his teachings, his scientific activity, and the nature of his discoveries. Author Andrew Gray was a former pupil, and assistant, of Lord Kelvin, and he ventures "to sketch here and there the scene in his classroom and laboratory, and to record some of the incidents of his teaching and work". With formulae and sketches throughout the book, to clarify the mathematical theory of electricity, the motive power of heat, thermodynamics, vortex motion, hydrodynamics, the energy theory of electrolysis, electrical oscilations, gyrostatic action, electrostatics and magnetism, telegraph signalling and navigational instruments. Also included in this volume are his honours and distinctions, as well as a conclusion by the author.
