W L Renwick wrote the postscript to this book, in which he informs the reader that the observations in the book were written by 12 people who met Burns and that "their solid judgment was - and is - worth having". These people are John Murdoch, David Sillar, Henry Mackenzie, Robert Anderson, Dugald Stewart, Josiah Walker, Sir Walter Scott, John Ramsay, William Clark, Joseph Farington, Sir Samuel Egerton Brydges and Mrs Walter Riddell, nee Maria Woodley.
