On 25 November 1987, British Coal Scottish Area Director Mr George McAlpine announced that Seafield Colliery in Fife would be considered for closure on January 11 1988 unless production at the pit rose to 14,000 tonnes per week. He suggested that the onus for the pit's survival rested with the workforce, and inferred that the danger to the pit arose from a combination of the effects of the NUM overtime ban and from workforce pig-headedness. This report examines the background to Mr McAlpine's decision.
