The hero of the story , Hugh Cleghorn, is the great-grandfather of the author. In 1795 he embarked on a journey to Ceylon, the result of which was the annexation of the Island of Ceylon to the British Empire. He became the first Colonial Secretary of Ceylon but after a disagreement with the Governor he returned home to Stravithie where he ended his days. He is buried in Dunino kirkyard.
