Fife Council Museums decided to spend the year 2000 on a 'Journey to the centre of the earth' celebrating aspects of the Kingdom's rich coal mining heritage. Scotland's only deep coal mine operating today is at Longannet Complex on the western edge of Fife. From these two facts the 'Black Diamonds' project was born. Colin Cavers was chosen by a selection panel to record the working life of teh mine in photographs. The resulting exhibition was launched at The Lochgelly Centre in November 2000 and then transferred to Dunfermline's Pittencrief House Museum until march 2001. This book contains many of Colin's extraordinary photogrpahs from the display along with an excellent summary of the area's coal mining history by Guthrie Hutton. - from the foreward by Councillor Jim Brennan.
