Fort Ligonier was built as the final post on the 'Forbes' road, the road was constructed by General Forbes as a form of slow advance through the backcountry with the aim of attacking Fort Duquesne. This guidebook to the Fort Museum gives a general history of the Fort and some background history into why it was built.
