Rev John Erskine, D.D. the Scottish theologian, was born near Dunfermline at Carnock on 2nd June 1721. This short 'consideration' sets out Erskine's views that each and every man should be able to follow their own conscience on religion and should not be persecuted for following their religion, whether Protestant or Papist. He refers to the massacres of members of both religious groups, dependant on the current Monarch, and the supposed change in the Catholic faith as accepting the Protestant faith and living quietly beside each other, in Scotland at least.
