Rev John Erskine, D.D. the Scottish theologian, was born near Dunfermline at Carnock on 2nd June 1721. His sermons were clear, vigorous expositions of a moderate Calvinism, in which metaphysical argument and practical morality are happily blended. This sermon was delivered to a specific audience with the view to implementing and cementing in the young minds in question, the importance of religion as part of a rounded and fulfilling education.
