From the introduction: 'The records summarised in this publication are volumes produced in evidence in actions before the Court of Session, the supreme civil court of Scotland, and retained amongst the processes of the Court. (A process, in this sense, is all the papers lodged in the court by both parties during the course of an action at Law.) The modern practice is to return productions to both parties when the actions are concluded, but failure to do so in the past has enhanced the value of the Court of Session records for research purposes.'
