Thomas Pennant was a Welsh naturalist, traveller and writer. He undertook two tours in Scotland, one in 1769 and one in 1772. Each of these journeys became popular travelogues, his observations encompass the scenery and wildlife, the people and their life styles, local customs and superstitions. In this volume there is a section describing his journey through Fife (pages 185-220). he ebters Fife near Newburgh passing by the Mugdrum cross and heading to Falkland, at this point he details some of the history of Falkland Palace. From here he travels to St. Andrews, passing by Melville House and Dairsie again detailing some of the history of these locations and making observations about Dairsie Church and Dairsie Castle. There are several pages about St. Andrews, including information about the Cathedral, Castle, Church of St. Salvator and the University, along with Cardinal Beaton and Archbishop Sharp. His journey then turns towards the coast with many of the coastal towns and villages being highlighted including, Lundie, Leven, Kirkcaldy, Kinghorn, Aberdour, Inverkeithing and Donibristle. His next stop is Dunfermline with details about it's history and of course the Abbey and Palace. He also highlights some local industries in particular giving details about early mines and mining in Fife. The islands of the Forth are also described, the Isle of May, Inchcolm and Inchkeith all being featured.
