One evening in March 1860 a party of gentlemen were assembled at Dysart House when it was suggested that perhaps Fife should have its own cavalry regiment. The idea was favourably received and the task of forming the regiment fell to Colonel Anstruther Thomson., who in 1892 wrote a comprehensive history of the regiment from its inception.
