In 1879 Randolph Gordon Erskine Wemyss became the laird of Wemyss Castle and soon realised the value of the vast coal deposits lying beneath his estates. Wemyss appreciated the need for a large coal port in East Fife so decided to build his own and chose Methil as the site.
