this book tells the story of that thriteenth-cetury Scottish Alexander who was crowned king at seven years old, twice married, greatly loved, yet is now only known to most people by his lonely memorial near Kinghorn on the coast of Fife. His reign lasted nearly forty years, and was a brief golden age for Scotland, on which those who survived the systematic brutality of King Edward I's subsequent English invasion were to look back with longing. The epic story of Scottish resistance which culminated in the country's recovery of its independence under its greatest leaders, Wallace and Bruce, has already been written in 'The Lion is Come', but the causes and opportunities which provoked King Edward's claim to feudal superiority belong yo Alexander's story, which has not often been told before.
