A useful tool for researchers, the descriptive list of plans is an index to some of the plans preserved in the Scottish Record Office. Each entry gives a description of teh map, details of size and scale, date and in some instances the map maker. Of particular interest in this volume are the entries for Fife, which cover: Aberdour, Auchtermuchty, Ballingry, Balmerino, Burntisland, Carnbee, Carnock, Culross, Cupar, Dalgety, Dunfermline, Falkland, Ferry-Port-on-Craig, Forgan, Inverkeithing, Kinglassie, Kirkcaldy and Dysart, Largo, Leslie, Markinch, Pittenweem, St. Andrews and St. Leonards, Scoonie, Strathmiglo, Tulliallan and Wemyss.
