When the Fife Pits website project was commenced a number of years ago, one of our aims was to find and map the locations of as many old coal pits and mines as possible, from whatever sources were available to us, to add to the more well-known 'modern' collieries of the 20th century. With only a few small areas of Fife still to research in more detail, we are confident that the final figure will not be far off 1000 individual coal works. We have included in this publication a number of the Fife Pits website sketch maps and labelled aerial views to illustrate the extent of coal mining across the county.
