John Allan was born in the small hamlet of Gowkhill in the parish of Carnock in 1847. He attended the Free Abbey Academy in Dunfermline and later was apprenticed to architect Robert Hay (c1819-1867). Hay had a practice at Abbey Park Place in Dunfermline. He then went on to work in Stirling. This publication gives details of his life and work, describing his style and his involvement in various projects in and around Stirling.
