The building of the new town of Glenrothes was started in 1950. By the end of 1965 the population had passed 18,000 and was expanding at the rate of 3500 per year. The task of organising and directing the town's growth was entrusted to the Development Corporation appointed by the Secretary of State for Scotland in 1948.
