A collection of letters between Mrs Robert Low, from the family home Clatto, Fife and her son John in India. John Low attended St Andrews University. He sailed in 1804 as an Ensign in the Madras Army. Between 1812-13 he served as Persian Interpreter and Head of Intelligence Staff to Colonel Dowse. He also took part in the Battle of Maheidpore in December 1817.

Low, John, General Sir John Low, son of Robert Low and Susannah Elizabeth Malcolm; married Augusta Ludlow Shakespear, daughter of John Talbot Shakespear and Amelia Thackeray, in 1829. Educated at St. Andrew's University;he was with the Honourable East India Company Service; held the offices of Resident at Gwalior, Lucknow, Hyderabad and Deccan; invested as a Knight Grand Commander, Order of the Star of India (G.C.S.I.); gained the rank of Lieutenant-General in 1859.
