George Brunton was born in Cupar in 1811. Son to a local Tailor he recieved little education in his early years. Later he attended the Sabbath School and excelled to the extent that he was offered a place to study at St. Andrews University, however the death of his father in 1823 meant that he had to train as a tailor to help his family make ends meet. With little formal education he still continued an interest in learning and a particular interest in Biblical studies. George was a member of the West Port Church fellowship and as such was tasked with forming a Sabbath School in the village of Luthrie (Parish of Criech) near Cupar. He was highly successful and continued to set up other Sabbath Schools in Cupar. He was a member of the Burnside Church in Cupar and involved in the affairs of the church, becoming an elder at the age of 25. A leader of the Cupar Temperance movement and with an interest in local politics. In the last years of his life his active mind was occupied in writing and he was involved in the monthly newspaper the 'Advertiser'. George Brunton died in the January of 1853, this volume brings together a memoir of his life and a collection of his writings.
