This novel written by Robert Graham of Dunfermline, is about the power, celebrity and sexual magnetism that characterise the remarkable rise to fame and celebrity of Anders Hecht. Against the turmoil of 1968 Europe he was a visionary whose political analysis was acute and alarming to governments but compelling to followers from all sectors of society. His glamour is intensified by his marrying the beautiful, driven Cornelia from the student politics of California. However, charisma and erotic power have a darker side too , revealed some twenty years later when the death of Cornelia, on a pleasure yacht hired by the famous couple, is discovered. On the cruise are people who had dealt with them, fought with them, slept with them. In the glorious setting in the waters off Tenerife, it becomes clear that what has often been presented as love, has been a wild and merciless hunger. At first the Spanish police seem uncertain and ineffectual, then comes the appearance of the dapper, aloof, legendary Inspector Rojas. Rojas is known to be an incorruptible master of psychology - a mysterious man who apparently feels no passion himself. He is courteous, sparing with words, disturbingly patient and unnerving. We discover that he has his own very personal drive to penetrate the maze of anger, desire, disillusion and manipulation that surround the lives of those close to Anders and Cornelia.
