The two prizewinning essays in a competition run by the National Security Savings, Bank, Dunfermline, restricted to working men in Dunfermline and district. Originally intended to be two prizes of 5 and 3 guineas, the standard was so high that equal money was awarded to each winning entrant, with a further 2 single guineas going to two other highly commended essays. The presentation at the Free Abbey Church ws precede by a lecture entitled ''Social elavation of the Working-Classes''
