George West undertook in 1905-1909 an extensive study (published in 1910) of the aquatic flora of a large number of Scottish lochs as part of a Bathymetrical Survey of the Scottish Freshwater lochs. He visited 22 water bodies in the Fife and Kinross region and recorded 'the dominant and abundant plants of the lakes visited, together with some observations upon the environmental conditions under which they grew'. The object of the present survey was to repeat West's work and then, by comparing the species recorded, attempt to trace any trophic disturbance which may have occured in the intervening years.
