The Carnegie Medal is named after Andrew Carnegie, the Scottish-born philanthropist who provided the funding for many British public libraries. The medal was in honour of the centenary of Carnegie's birth, 1935. It would honour a particular form of literature and be presented annually by the Library Association. So it came about that that the medal was awarded for the best children's book by a British author, and awarded annually from 1936.
